United then had to do a lot of defending, and yet again Jones had to come off for McNair with an injury though he didn't look bad.
Chris Smalling had to make a crucial block before De Gea again pulled off a stunning save to preserve United's lead.
Watford had another chance on the 75th minute as Troy Deeney thumps a shot straight at De Gea.
United should have extended their lead on their 84th minute when a Dalley Blind ball over the top finds Lingard who tries to lob Gomes, with the Watford goalkeeper saving the effort.
Two minutes later United conceded a penalty after Rojo brought down Ighalo in the box.
Deeney converted the resulting spot-kick Pegging the game back to a draw.
But United were not through and on the 90th minute, they went so close as Chris Smalling flicks a corner towards goal and Gomes made a great save.
But the game was far from over as Bastian Schweinsteiger's cross-shot from a tight angle is turned in by Troy Deeney for United's winning goal. United doing it the Sir Alex way.
