Manchester United got back to winning and goal scoring form in the league, putting two past West Brom. It was the first time in five matches United will be scoring more than one goal in a match. The team's defensive stability continued. Lingard's well composed finish in the 52nd minute and Juan Mata converted penalty after Martial had been fouled late into the game, was enough to give United the three points.
Here are five things to note from the game:
Here are five things to note from the game:
1. Lingard - The birth of a star: Every Premier League season delivers it's own star to the footballing world. And early into the season, a star has been sighted at Old Trafford. At the beginning of the season, all eyes were on Memphis Depay to be the revelation at Old Trafford, but the Dutchman has failed to live up to expectation. Martial came in an became an instant hit. But this week, it was Lingard that joined the elite group of the Old Trafford favourites. His fantastic assist in the Champions League tie was to plead for more playing time, and he got to start against the Baggies. His debut goal is one he won't forget in a hurry. Beautifully taken with great calm and composure, despite the number of opposition defenders in his front. The only thing he needs for now is development and playing time.
2. United's defence, the team's fortress: despite the criticism from the media and ex-players, one aspect of the united team that has improved significantly is the defence. United have played four games without conceding a goal, and have only conceded one goal at Old Trafford this season. Against West Brom, the united defenders again were on top of their game. Smalling, Blind and Rojo all dealt with the physical presence of the West Brom forwards well, reducing them to just half chances. Another good day in office for the defenders.
3. The Academy is still producing stars: despite spending over $200m, Van Gaal has been able to keep a vital balance between rotating his established expensive signings and the young academy products. He has been able to maintain the United's academy production line. This was expressly visible against West Brom. Goal scorer Lingard is from the academy, and another academy product, 18- year-old Cameron Borthwick Jackson made his debut. This is undoubtedly a big plus for Van Gaal.
4. Rooney can be subbed: Van Gaal has come under intense pressure over the last few weeks for his continued faith and trust in his underperforming captain. Though he got the all important gaol during the week, Rooney was again not at his best against the Baggies. Late into the game, the striker was substituted for Ander Herrera. A move that was warmly welcomed by the Old Trafford faithfuls.
5. United still work in progress: It was an all round solid performance capped with a comfortable victory, but the United team are still far from being called a finished product. The team still lacks the vibe and cutting edge in the final third.
