One of the biggest transfer news in the last few hours is
that Manchester United is planning a £25 million bid for Liverpool winger Raheem
Sterling. The winger’s future has been in doubt over the past few weeks after
he refused and stalled on signing a new contract with the Reds. With two years
left on his current contract.
This has opened door for a lot of rumours and potential moves,
with Real Madrid, Arsenal and Bayern Munich all linked to the player.
But the most recent of the rumors is that linking the player to
arch rival Manchester United. It remains to be seen if the move is possible,
looking at the fact that Manchester United parade a lot of attacking players,
who will compete with Sterling if he finally moves to United. Players like
Angel Di Maria, Mata, Herrera, Young and recently Fellaini are his likely
competitors. United’s new Dutch signing Depay also is another player who will
be hoping for a lot of playing time under fellow Dutch man Van Gaal, in his
first season.
The rivalry between both clubs is one of the hottest in Europe and
may come to play in this potential move, only few players have moved directly between
the two sides while a little more have played for both teams, moving through
another team. Michael Owen and Paul Ince are privileged to have played for both
teams while Phill Chisnall in 1964 moved directly from United to Liverpool.
Allenby Chilton was the last player to move from Liverpool to United in 1938.
Gabriel Heinze was another direct transfer that could have occurred
between both sides, but the Fergie Vs Rafa Benitez row, couldn’t make the deal
happen. And Sir Alex Ferguson maintained United’s supporters will never forgive
him assisting the team building of their most significant rivals.
If the move materializes then, it will be once in a history move
that will put Sterling under more spotlight.
