LVG's six months at United in Quotes – Part 1

LVG WITH A TOAST
Louis Van Gaal was appointed United coach on 19th of May 2014 and has spent six months on the Job. In his few months at United, he’s developed into fans favourite, friend of the press and only recently gave media men a toast during one of his interviews this yuletide season.
Redly United look back at some of his press conferences, and draw out some quotes, that establishes his philosophy and what he thinks about certain issues. The quotes are not arranged in any other, and do not follow any pattern.

"This club has big ambitions. I too have big ambitions, Together I'm sure we will make history."--- Speaking after he has just been appointed as United boss.

"To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud.

"I have managed in games at Old Trafford before and know what an incredible arena Old Trafford is and how passionate and knowledgeable the fans are."

Van Gaal when asked if United will be better in 2015: "Of course. We shall be better. So watch."

“I can make every player better. I’m sorry. That’s arrogant, but I can.”

Van Gaal on the effect of two games in three days: "In the second half, it was not football anymore. It was a struggle for life."

“We have a training session, always 11 against 11, simulating the opponent, but we can’t do that now.  “We have to play twice within 48 hours. With UEFA and FIFA, it’s forbidden to play within 48 hours – but OK, it’s England.” speaking about the frenetic Xmas league schedule.

‘‘Falcao can be in great form, but the team has to be in great form.’’ --- speaking on Falcao rediscovering his form.’’

"He has the lung capacity to run 90 minutes as a midfielder," That's why I used him like a midfielder. I can also use him as a striker. For the team at the moment, it's better he plays in midfield." ---Speaking on Wayne Rooney’s ability to play in different positions.

‘‘I have changed that, I have given them free time and Christmas day with the family,’--- Speaking on giving the players Xmas break which was new at United .

"I saw Manchester City's first half against Crystal Palace, they struggled but 3-0, that is the difference. When you want to be a part of the title race, you have to win these games.’’ --- Speaking after his side drew 1 – 1 with Aston Villa.

Van Gaal: ‘‘I am not only focused on results’’. ‘That’s the main important thing and when I speak with Sir Alex he says “not any problem, you have won”, but for me it’s also the performance that is very important.

‘‘When you perform, you shall win more. That’s what I want to show to the fans and the players want to show that. For example, the game against Hull City (a 3-0 win) was a good game. We dominated for 90 minutes and I want to see more games like that. And now there are too few games that we are dominating for 90 minutes and that’s a process.’’

‘‘Of course when you win six times in a row then the confidence is rising, but I am still looking for a game that is closer to the perfect game than until now.’’

‘‘I have three captains but, of course, there is a sequence — Rooney is one, Carrick is two, Fletcher is three. Carrick is my captain so he brings a lot of experience, also a lot of composure. I can use him in different positions and that I like. Because he is my captain, he can transfer my philosophy on the pitch.’’ ---  After he made Michael Carrick his vice captain.

‘‘The first demand is the fitness of a player,. ‘Now he shows fitness in the training sessions so maybe I shall select him. Maybe for the bench or the line-up. Wait and see.’’ --- Speaking on Falcao.

''The media are suggesting and that’s a big mistake. That’s why I’m always angry because you are inventing stories. There are no stories.’’ --- speaking on the news linking united to signing Valdes.

‘‘I have an assistant manager in Ryan Giggs and he presented an analysis of Liverpool and he did it in a marvellous way, so I'm very pleased.’’ --- LVG depending on Giggs tactical knowledge ahead of the game against Liverpool, United won 3 – 0.

‘‘I think Southampton played better than Manchester United - I think we were the lucky guy.’’

"Paddy didn’t have any confidence.” --- Giving the reason Paddy McNair was substituted in the 36th minutes against Southampton.

“Robin wasn’t playing very well so then you have to compare him with other players, and he was a lucky boy, At that time, Falcao was injured and I had to compare him with Wayne Rooney and James Wilson.’’ -  Speaking on Van Persie’s run in the team despite his poor form after he scored a brace against Southampton.

“I am not jealous of the squad of Manchester City, I am proud of my players and that is the most important thing. When we play like a team we have a big chance to win.”----- Van Gaal ahead of the Manchester Derby.

"I do think 13 is few for a striker. I want to improve that, You can count his touches on the ball but more important is how he is playing. it was a very bad game for him. That is why I changed him.’’ --- Speaking after RVP had a bad game and was substituted against former team Arsenal.

‘‘For me, it is not important who scores. The team has to score."

‘‘Every player has to fight for his position and I shall always pick the best of the players. It has to be a suitable mix.’’

“Before I came here, of course, I had heard of his reputation.” ---- speaking on Wayne Rooney.

‘‘But, from the first day, he was not the Wayne Rooney that people had talked about. He was, in my eyes, a great example in training and, of course, he has achieved a certain level. I think he shall always play with me — although, when he is in a bad moment, maybe I can be convinced to change him.’’

“But he is my captain now. He is the man who sets the example for the other players. So I’m very pleased. I have the impression that he lives for football and that he likes being the captain of Manchester United.’’

“I can see why he made the tackle but I think you have to be far friendlier,” said Van Gaal. “He did it too unfriendly and that is maybe his biggest mistake.’’--- Speaking on Wayne Rooney’s red card against West Ham

“In professional football, you make professional fouls. I’ve seen it happen five or six times today and, professionally, I can understand that.’’ --- Speaking on Wayne Rooney’s tackle that led to his red card against West Ham.
