The Portuguese is the favorite to replace Van Gaal as United manager, but the Old Trafford hierarchy are considering sticking with the Dutchman for his third and final season, which could mean losing out on Mourinho again.
There was a report that United have contacted the former Chelsea manager telling him, he would take over at United in 2017, when Van Gaal's contract expires.
José Mourinho will however not wait for United. Mourinho has made it clear that he wants to return to football very soon. Though he prefers to stay in England.
The Portuguese has also said he is not in the best position to turn down offers, and is open to any club.
This means he is open to offers outside the Premier League. PSG, Real Madrid and some clubs in the Chinese League have been linked with a move for Mourinho. He has however given priority to United.
But with the United job not forthcoming, Mourinho is prepared to move on.
