Ashley Young has signed a new three year contract with Manchester
United, which extends his stay at Old Trafford till 2018. The winger former
contract was billed to expire in the summer of 2016(end of this new season). But
the player happened to be one of the most improved player in Van Gaal’s first
season has made 115 appearances and scored 13 goals since joining from Aston
Villa in 2011.
Unsettled United number one keeper David De Gea will not
play in United’s opening game against Tottenham because according to United
coach he is not mentally ready. In his pre match press conference earlier today
Van Gaal admitted ‘‘we have problem of course with De Gea. He shall not play; you
have to wait to see who is starting. His absence may open the door for new signing
Sergio Romero to start.’’ Another player who may not feature tomorrow is Bastian
Schweinsteiger. In Van Gaal’s words
‘‘Schweinsteiger came at the last moment
out of his holidays. I don’t think he is
fit enough. We have to build him the fitness I think he needs.’’ Marcos Rojo
will also miss the Premier League opener as the defender did not take part in
the team’s pre-season preparations. Though the Argentine was given an extended
break because of engagement in the Copa America. Passport problems denied him of teaming up
with his team mates when expected. According to Van Gaal ‘‘it is not possible
for Rojo to be match fit as he was the last player to come back.’’
Manchester United have been handed what looks like a easy
tie in their Champions League qualifiers. Manchester United will play Club
Brugge in the last phase of the qualifiers. The first leg is to be played
within August 18-19 while the return leg on the 25-26. It looks like a walk in
the park for united as many fans and pundit expect the Old Trafford giant to
make it through into the group stage of the Champions League after last season
absence.
Manchester United have never played Brugge.
Memphis Depay will wear the iconic jersey number 7 for
United this season. Morgan
Schneiderlin will wear the number 28, while
German captain Bastian Schweinsteiger will wear the number 31, previously worn
by Maroune Fellaini. The Belgian midfielder will now put on jersey number 27. New
goalkeeper Sergio Romero will wear the number 20 while new right back Darmain
will wear the number 36.
