Manchester United 1-1 Leicester: Three things we learnt

Manchester United once again slipped when it mattered the most.

Heading into the last four league games of the season, Juan mata best described the remaining games for United when he described them as 'finals'.

However against the Leicester, United didn't play like they were playing in a final.

It was another improved but casual performance from Van Gaal's men. They failed to get the three points, when what was at stake was more than the three points.

Here are three talking points from and about the game.

1. Top four almost over, Van Gaal almost out

Before this game,  United had hopes of making the top four. But United's first assignment was to win all their remaining league matches.

Then wait for Arsenal or City to drop points.

And with both teams still having to face each other, United stood a good chance of benefiting from their slips.

This was not to be as United failed in their first duty of the process.

On an afternoon United drew Leicester, Manchester City lost to Southampton. A United victory and followed by a City defeat meant United would have closed the gap on their City rivals to one point, with a game in hand.

What an opportunity wasted!

United still stand a chance of making the top four, but now have to Arsenal get the better off City, for something to happen in their favour.

Without the top four, it is difficult seeing Van Gaal at United next season.

The debate before the game was will making the top four and winning the FA Cup be good enough to appease the board and fans?

Yes, but with the top four gradually fading out of sight, seeing Van Gaal at United next season is looking blurred.

2. Poor defending from set pieces

Manchester United's defence has been it's stronghold this season, but against Leicester City, they found it difficult coping with set pieces.

Leicester's equalizer was from a poorly defended free kick. After that,  the United defence had a difficult time coping all through the game.

Anthony Martial had to be at the right side of the post to clear a ball almost going in from a Leicester set piece.

This is not the first game this season United will not be able to cope with the opposition's attack from set pieces.

United Conceded against Tottenham, West Ham and were lucky not to against Aston Villa from set pieces.

It's time Van Gaal and his defence rise to to stop or minimize errors from such.

3. Fellaini and Rooney new found form but lucky

Both players are the best beneficiary of Van Gaal's new 4-3-3 formation.

Against Everton, the duo had a nice game, playing in front of Michael Carrick.

Rooney always had the potential to play in that role, but Fellaini's new found form seems a surprise.

Van Gaal seem to have discovered his best position on the field. With more time and consistency, he can turn to that highly effective box-to-box midfielder United fans had always dreamt of.

Both were however lucky not to have been sent off. Fellaini for elbowing Robert Huth, and Rooney for a bringing down an opponent late on in the game.

Lucky duo?

Fellaini may not be that lucky as the FA would likely ban him for violent conduct.

Wayne Rooney OK playing in midfield but admits top four now difficult

The Manchester United captain seems to have find a new lease of life playing as a midfielder over the last few weeks for United. He's looked sharper and more influential in games.

However, against Leicester, Wayne Rooney and his teammates could raise their game to get the maximum three points.

He said the whole team is disappointed with the draw, which now makes the top four  tough job for United.

"We're disappointed. I think we were the better team, we played with good tempo." He said after the game via ESPN.

"After they scored we were a little bit off it, but we came out in the second half and I felt we dominated those 45 minutes.

"I feel I'm playing OK in midfield and I'm enjoying it. It's going to be tough to get in the top four now. We felt before this game we had to take maximum points from our remaining games."

Alan Shearer: Marouane Fellaini will get banned for elbowing Robert Huth

The Newcastle legend can't see the Belgian escaping FA action after he was caught on camera elbowing the Leicester defender.

The incident happened in the first half, as United were about to take a corner kick. But referee Mark Oliver didn't see it.

Tottenham's Dele Alli got a three match suspension for a similar incident in their game against West Brom, and Shearer can't see the FA overlooking the Fellaini case.

"Marouane Fellaini will get reported to the FA, If you compare that to Dele Alli then he he will get, banned." He said on the BBC after the game.

Robbie Savage: United unlikely to make top four after Leicester draw

Robbie Savage has written off United top four hopes, after the team's 1-1 draw with Leicester City.

United head into the game, knowing getting all three points was vital to their top four hopes.

But the team couldn't find  second and winning goal after Morgan's equalizer, which cancelled out Martial's opener.

A United win would have been invaluable as City later lost to Southampton in the late kick off on Sunday.

United are currently four points behind their City rivals with game in hand which still gives faint hopes of them making the top four.

Former Blackburn midfielder Savage however thinks United have blown their  chances.

"Their top four chances look unlikely now, but they stayed and clapped off every single one of Leicester’s players.

"A draw was a fair result." He said on BBC after the game.

Sky Sports pundit: Fellaini can't escape ban for elbowing Huth

The Manchester United midfielder was caught on camera elbowing the Leicester City defender, though referee Mark Oliver missed the incident.

Both players clashed as United played a corner kick in the first half.

Analysing the game, Graeme Souness says he can't see the 28 year old Belgian escaping been ban.

"There is a bit of a tangle and I tell you what, Huth is lucky as well as Fellaini. I say Huth is lucky because he has caught him under the chin. If that catches him full square across his face, then he's lost several teeth or broke his nose and I don't think he can stay on the pitch. He said on Sky Sports.

"In that respect, he is lucky, but Fellaini won't escape a ban for that. I just can't see it."

The incident is similar to Tottenham's Dele Ali's violent conduct in their last game against West Brom, for which the youngster was given a three match ban.

Manchester United 1-1 Leicester City: Player Ratings

Manchester United lost more than a point, when they failed to up their game against a compact and well organized Leicester team.

The best actions of the game were in the first half, as Anthony Martial gave United the lead inside the first ten minutes.

The Foxes however equalized with a free kick few minutes later.

Here's a rating of the United players

David De Gea: 6

Typical De Gea performance. Didn't have much to do, but was effective, did well with a Mahrez shot midway the second half.

Antonio Valencia: 7

A performance that would contend for the man of the match. Did very well to provide the assist for United's first goal. Did well both defensively and offensively.

Chris Smalling: 5.5

A not too commanding performance from the Englishman. Struggled at times against Ulloa.

Daley Blind: 6

A calm and composed showing from the Dutchman. But was too soft at times.

Marcos Rojo: 5.5

Not too solid performance from the Argentine.
Whipped in a number of decent crosses.
Struggled against Ryan Mahyrez, and could have conceded a penalty against the Algerian.

Michel Carrick: 6.5

Provided the needed stability and calmness in the midfield. Provided the room for Fellaini and Rooney to attack.

Maroune Fellaini: 7

Another stellar performance from the Belgian in his recent resurgence. He's been a great beneficiary of new 4-4-3 formation.

Looked dangerous in box, and was always available in the midfield.

His tussle and elbow on Huth will sure be considered after the game, and may land him some match bam.

Wayne Rooney: 6.5

Lucky not to be sent off. Did well in the midfield. But couldn't get into those dangerous positions. Could have done better with the free kicks.

Jesse Lingard: 5.5

Another game with a lot of hard worked but no cutting edge. He should have done better and acted stronger when he was on goal in the first half. Combined well with Valencia on the right flank.

Anthony Martial: 7.5

Scored United's only goal. Looked dangerous all through. Denied time and space by the compact Leicester defence.

Marcus Rashford: 6

Engaged in a lot of running around, but was denied space in between the two big Leicester centre defenders.

Substitutes

Ander Herrera: 6

Came in for Maroune Fellaini and provided another dimension to the United side. Initiated a move late on that could have given United the winning goal. Did well in linking up play.

Juan Mata: 5

Presented with a good header, but didn't stand a good chance against Leicester's Morgan in the air. Couldn't do much.

Memphis Depay: 5

His major contribution was the controversial free kick he won for United. The debate will linger on, if Drinkwater fouled him in the box or not.

Van Gaal gives reasons for United's failure in the league

The Manchester United manager has blamed injuries for his team's poor showing in the league this season.

United host title favorites Leicester City on Sunday, and the Dutchman believes United could have been competing with the Foxes at the top of the table if not for injuries.

"I have respect for the results of Leicester City but I can only speak about facts.

"And the facts are that, before our injuries, we,were first in the league.

"You can’t deny that. That is a fact.

“After that, especially in December when all my full-backs were injured, I had to solve that and I couldn’t solve that problem.

"Now, we are again in a good run and we don’t have as many injuries any more. So that run is also a consequence of that." He told Daily Star.

Van Gaal may have selected the same squad that defeated Everton in the FA Cup semifinals.

According to Manchester Evening News, seventeen of the players were snapped by a photographer, only Daley Blind was not pictured.

The photographer must have missed him when he disembarked from the team bus.

De Gea, Romero, Darmian, Valencia, Fosu-Mensah, Smalling, Rojo, Herrera, Schneiderlin, Fellaini, Carrick, Lingard, Memphis, Mata, Rooney, Rashford, Martial.

Confirmed: Van Gaal will still be at United next season

The Manchester United manager has confirmed that he will still be in charge at United next season.

The Dutchman has been under immense pressure this season.

His United side were knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage, and knocked out of the Europa League by arch rivals Liverpool.

United also face missing out of Champions League next season.

His playing pattern and selections have also come under scrutiny and a lot of fans, and pundits want him out.

The FA Cup remains United's only hope of winning a silverware this season.

Van Gaal has however revealed that he wanted to sign a two year deal with the United, but the board urged him to put pen to a three year deal. Hence he would still be around next season.

"We have a process of three years. I wanted to sign for two years, they wanted three years – not me. I signed for three years, so next year you see me again." He said via Daily Star.

This may be the reason why the United board have been extremely patient with the Dutchman. Given the fact they they persuaded him to signing a three year deal.

This however shouldn't guarantee him being in charge next season.

4-3-3: My Manchester United eleven to face Leicester City: Fellaini to start

Manchester United will be hoping to prolong Leicester City's wait for the title when they meet on Sunday.

Van Gaal seems to have changed to a 4-3-3 formation, that has worked over the last few games.

I expect him to keep up with that.

De Gea starts in goal.

Fosu-Mensah continues at right back. He had a moment of unease against Everton, but that's part of the learning process.

Smalling and Blind continue their blossoming partnership at centre back. Rojo starts at left back to complete the back four.

Schneiderlin was absent against Everton and I expect him to come in for this. His physicality and guile will be needed to stop Drinkwater and co. in the midfield.

Fellaini had a nice game in the FA Cup semifinal, and he should continue in the team. Rooney starts in the midfield. He was exceptional against the Toffees, and has spoken of his desire to play as a midfielder.

Martial starts on the left. Lingard had silent games over the last few weeks, and I expect a change on the right. Depay gets my benefit of the doubt for a start. He might just key into the last few games of the season.

Rashford lead the line once again.

United ready to bid for Leicester City star

Leicester City midfielder N'Golo Kante is now one of United's main summer target.

The 25 year old has been a revelation since joining the Foxes, and has received commendation for former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Leicester are willing to sell at the right price.

The right price for the Frenchman will be a bid in the region of £30m for a player the Foxes got for £8m.

Leicester are reportedly interested in United youngster Andreas Pereira and he could be part of the deal.

United's current midfield is ageing with the duo of Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger in their thirties, while Maroune Fellaini has been linked with a move to AS Roma.

This leaves Morgan Schneiderlin as United's best and most reliable option in the midfield.

A move for Kante would definitely be a good one for United.

BBC pundit predicts Manchester United Vs Leicester City match

BBC football expert Mark Lawrenson is predicting that the match between United and the Foxes will end in a stalemate.

Both sides go into the match needing the three points to boost their respective ambitions.

Three points at Old Trafford will confirm Leicester tithe winners, while United need the three points to keep their top four hopes alive.

Mark wrote on his column:

"This is not a must-win game for Leicester but it is for Manchester United, who need a victory to stay in touch with the top four.

"I think it will be a draw, which would be a decent result for Leicester, although it would prolong the title race to Monday night when Tottenham play Chelsea."

Mark finally predicts a 1-1 draw.
