England legend cast doubts over Rooney's role as a striker for National team

England great Peter Shilton has joined the teaming population of that thinks Wayne Rooney's role in the Three Lions is no longer as a striker.

Rooney's gradual decline as a striker this season has been coincidental  with the astronomic rise of Harry Keane and Jamie Vardy.

The Tottenham and Leicester stars have led their teams to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Keane has scored 25 goals while Vardy has got 22 goals to his credit. These compared to Rooney's seven league goals means the United captain stand no chance of starting as a striker based on current form for the Three Lions.

But as the team's captain, he must start somewhere.

Shilton, a legendary goalkeeper for the national team and Leicester believes England should make at least the semifinals in the upcoming European championship.

"I do think in terms of ability and skill, we have come on a long way – I think we’ve improved quite a bit." he told Daily Star.

"If England handle the pressure, I’d be disappointed if they didn’t get somewhere near the semi-finals."

"I would have Vardy in the England team, but it depends what system Hodgson wants to play.

"Him and Kane for me would be would be the two up front.

"If he’s going to play five in midfield then he’s got a decision to make.

"And I think Kane would be first choice as a target man.

"That’s not to say Wayne Rooney wouldn’t be a part of it, as he’s in a deep midfield role at the moment.

"As an out and out striker there are doubts."

For where Wayne would start, Roy Hodgson has got a big decision to make.
